When I was a kid,I was close to my dad,but as I grew older,my dad and I grew further apart. We always had totally different opinions. He thought that college was a waste of time, but for me it was important to finish college. He wanted me to work my way to the top as he had done in his field, but I wanted a different life. There was a time when we did not talk with each other.

A few months ago,I heard that my84-year-old dad was in poor health. When he called and asked whether I could move from Colorado back to Tennessee to help him,I knew he was seriously ill.I am his only child and so it was time to meet my father's requirement.

Two weeks after moving back,we bought a boat and started fishing again. Fishing was one of the few things that we did while I was young and that we both enjoyed. It is strange but true that as we are fishing we are able to put things that have kept us apart for so many years behind us.We are able to talk about things that we have never talked about before.Fishing has been healing the old wounds that have kept us apart.

It is not important how many fish we catch. It is about enjoying the relationship that we have not had for years.I'm62and he is84.When we are on the lake fishing,it is like two kids enjoying life.It is far better to find a way to put the unhappy past behind.I am so lucky to spend the happy time with my father in his last years. Now my heart is filled with love.A smile always graces my lips.

Every man wants his son to be somewhat of a clone, not in features but in footsteps. As he grows you also age,and your ambitions become more unachievable. You begin to realize that your boy,in your footsteps, could probably accomplish what you hoped for.But footsteps can be muddied and they can go off in different directions.

My son Jody has hated school since day one in kindergarten.Science projects waited until the last moment.Book reports weren't written until the final threat.I've been a newspaperman all my adult life.My daughter is a university graduate working toward her master's degree in English. But Jody? When he entered the tenth grade he became a"vo-tech"student(技校学生).They're called"motorheads"by the rest of the student body.

When a secretary in my office first called him"motorhead",I was shocked."Hey,he's a good kid,"I wanted to say."And smart, really."

I learned later that motorheads are, indeed, different. They usually have dirty hands and wear dirty work clothes. And they don't often make school honor rolls (光荣榜).

But being the parent of a motorhead is itself an experience in education. We who labor in clean shirts in offices don't have the abilities that motorheads have.I

7

began to learn this when I had my car crashed. The cost to repair it was estimated at$800."Hey,I can fix it,"said Jody.I doubted it,but let him go ahead, for I had nothing to lose.

My son, with other motorheads, fixed the car. They got parts(零件)from a junkyard,non-toasting toaster have been fixed.Neighbours and co-workers trust their car repair to him.

Since that first repair job,a broken air-conditioner,a non-functioning washer and a non-toasting toaster have been fixed.Neighbors and co-workers trust their car repairs to him.

These kids are happiest when doing repairs. They joke and laugh and are living in their own relaxed world. And their minds are bright despite their dirty hands and clothes.

I have learned a lot from my motorhead:publishers need printers, engineers need mechanics, and architects need builders. Most important,I have learned that fathers don't need clones in footsteps or anywhere else.

My son may never make the school honor roll. But he made mine.

46.What used to be the author's hope for his son?______

B.To resemble him in appearance.

C.To develop in a different direction.

D.To reach the author's unachieved goals.

A.His daughter does better in school.

B.His daughter has got a master's degree.

C.His son tried hard to finish homework.

D.His son couldn't write his book reports.

48.The author let his son repair the car because he believed that______.

A.His son had the ability to fix it.

B.it would save him much time.

C.it wouldn't cause him any more loss

D.other motorheads would come to help.

49.In the author's eyes,motorheads are______.

8

A.tidy and hardworking

B.cheerful and smart

0158b8394128915f804d2b160b4e767f5bcf800fzy but bright

D.relaxed but rude

50.What did the author realize in the end?______

A.It is unwise to expect your child to follow your path.

B.It is important for one to make the honor roll.

C.Architects play a more important role than builders.

D.Motorheads have greater ability than office workers.

An idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple:help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.

In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit(追求)to be enjoyed by all,the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus,as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched(发起)the“If All of Seattle Read the Same Book”project in1998.Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.

In Chicago, the mayor(市长)appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the“One Book,One Chicago”program. As a result, reading clubs and neighborhood groups sprang up around the city.Across the US,stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character.

The only problem arose in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity(一致)can be achieved.Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than into discussion about a book itself.

Ultimately,as Nancy points out,the level of success is not measured by how

9

many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process,or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared_a_word.

51.What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?

A.To invite authors to guide readers.

B.To encourage people to read and share.

C.To involve people in community service.

D.To promote the friendship between cities.

52.Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the project?

A.They had little interest in reading.

B.They were too busy to read a book.

C.They came from many different backgrounds.

D.They lacked support from the local government.

53.According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried

out?

A.In large communities with little sense of unity.

B.In large cities where libraries are far from home.

C.In medium-sized cities with a diverse population.

D.In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached.

54.The underlined words“shared a word”in Paragraph5probably mean

______.

A.exchanged ideas with each other

B.discussed the meaning of a word

C.gained life experience

0158b8394128915f804d2b160b4e767f5bcf800fed the same language

55.According to Nancy, the degree of success of the project is judged by

______.

A.the careful selection of a proper book

B.the growing popularity of the writers

C.the number of people who benefit from reading

D.the number of books that each person reads

四、阅读表达(本大题共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)

阅读下面短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题.

Almost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind a shopping cart(购物手推车).They will,in a lifetime, push the chrome-plated contraptions many miles. But few will know-or even think to ask-who it was that invented them.

Sylvan N.Goldman invented the shopping cart in1937.At that time he was in the supermarket business.Every day he would see shoppers lugging(吃力地携带)groceries around in baskets they had to carry.

One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business.

On June4,1937,Goldman's first carts were ready for use in his market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn't wait to see them using his invention.

But Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try.

After a while,Goldman decided to ask customers why they weren't using his carts."Don't you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket?"one shopper replied.

But Goldman wasn't beaten yet.He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try.To this end,Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping!Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony(假冒的)customers.

As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers of customers to his market. But not only did more people come-those who came bought more. With larger,easier-to-handle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before.

Today's shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman's original model.Perhaps that's one reason Americans today spend more than five times as

11

much money on food each year as they did before1937-before the coming of the shopping cart.

56.The underlined words"chrome-plate contraptions"in Paragraph1refer to ______.(No more than3words)
